Vimeo Is Now Available In French and German

Last week Vimeo added two new languages to their repertoire—French and German.  Previously the site was available only in English and Spanish, but the video site reached out to the Vimeo community to help translate the site and make it available in the additional languages.

Alex Dao writes on the Vimeo Staff blog, “We want to give huge hugs of thanks to all the fantastic francophones and Germaniacs who helped make this project happen.  They made sure the translations maintained our special Vimeo flavor, and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

To update your language settings, if you’d like to experience Vimeo in French or German, just head over to the language selector at the bottom of any Vimeo page or in your account settings.  Users that already have their browsers set to Spanish, French or German will find that the Vimeo site has been changed for them automatically.

Vimeo user Mono Collective asks in a comment on the blog post, “what about subtitles / closed caption feature for the videos?”  As it seems that Vimeo is working to make their site more accessible for non-English speaking users, this seems like an appropriate next step.

Blake Whitman, VP of Creative Development at Vimeo, responded to Mono Collective with a simple “Coming…”, which seems to indicate that subtitles and closed captioning are something that Vimeo has in the works.  I reached out to Vimeo for comment, but they said that this is something they can’t talk about at this time, but we’ll keep you posted as we receive more information.
