This morning Vimeo has launched a brand new iPhone app that they’re calling “awesome, sleeker, more beautiful, way awesomer, and also much more awesomer than ever before.”
The original Vimeo iPhone app launched back in March of 2011, and it was pretty awesome back then as well, but Vimeo has streamlined things in the new version, getting rid of some of the more complex features (like the in-app video editor) and making the interface a lot simpler and more intuitive.
The new app includes a ‘Feed’ tab, where you can check out videos from your contacts, an ‘Explore’ tab where you can check out Staff Picks, browse the Vimeo Video School, discover music videos, inspirational videos, animation, time-lapse and more, or perform a Vimeo search. You can also queue up videos you’ve added to your ‘Watch Later’ list or check out your own videos under the ‘Me’ tab.
The Next Web reports that “this release is more of a milestone than you might thing: it’s the service’s first time building an app entirely in-house.” And the choice to create the app in-house seems to have been a good idea—this iteration embodies the Vimeo spirit to a tee. It’s simple, easy to use and it looks great.
While the in-app video editor has been removed, the app still includes the functionality to shoot and upload videos directly through the app (although when I played around with it this morning the feature caused my 4S to freeze on the loading screen—not sure if it’s just me or if this is a bug that needs to be worked out).
Try the app out for yourself and let us know what you think. Oh, but before you do, be sure to watch this bizarro video that Vimeo put out to promote the app (and note that bizarro videos are one of the 9 reasons why Vimeo is officially the coolest video site for creatives).
