Vimeo Drops A Major Redesign…And It Looks Amazing

Last night Vimeo hinted on Twitter that today they’d have ”a HUGE announcement” and this morning they haven’t let us down.  On the Vimeo blog, they announced a brand new Vimeo.  Vimeo hasn’t just redesigned their site, they’ve completely torn the old Vimeo down and built a new one from scratch that puts greater focus on your videos, improves the user experience and incorporates new features that the community has been asking for.

Vimeo staff member Soxiam reports on the blog, “Today is a big day – one of the biggest in the short-ish history of our small-ish company.  For the past year (37 years in Internet time), we’ve been working nonstop on a project that we’ve desperately wanted to tell you about.  Because, frankly, it’s all about you.  Our willpower muscles are pretty much at the breaking point right now, and so we are doubly ecstatic to finally let the tiger out of the satchel and make this officially official announcement: We built you a new Vimeo.

So what’s changed?  For starters, the new Vimeo puts a much greater focus on your videos by making the (redesigned) video player larger than ever.  The new 960×540 player sits at the top of the screen while the distracting related info hangs out below the fold.  With distractions minimized, the focus is on your videos and, really, what more could you ask from a video site?

Soxiam writes, “In addition to increasing the visual splendiferousness of your videos, we enhanced just about every aspect of the Vimeo experience.”  The new Vimeo is simplified, optimized and organized.  They’ve also added a spiffy new recommendation engine that just may wind up sucking you in to hours and hours of Vimeo hopping—a practice that most of us have become all too familiar with on YouTube.

Vimeo has also worked to incorporate user’s ideas about how to improve Vimeo.  Soxiam says, “We’ve incorporated your ideas, from minor tweaks to massive features, to the point that we’re making all of you honorary Senior Vice Presidents of Brilliant Concepts at Vimeo.  The check is in the mail.”  I’m going to take them at their word on that last part—where can I verify that you guys have the right address for me? ;-)

The major changes include a brand new video page, better browsing, a new homepage layout in which your “inbox” becomes your “feed”, following, better uploading, more privacy control, advanced search, and more.  To check out the new Vimeo for yourself, visit vimeo.com/new and don’t forget to let us know what you think!
