VKontakte Forced to Reverse Position on Same Sex Status

Vkontatke, the incumbent champion social network of Russia, found itself in a bit of controversy this week as a gay user found that he couldn’t properly express his same-sex orientation on the network. When he tried to contact the company to get the problem solved, he ran into a technician to asked him to change his gender to female in order to be able to show his relationship.

While this may have been a lazy technician, the man discovered upon further inspection that Vkontakte’s official position was in line with the Russian government, which currently does not recognize same-sex marriage. This led to an appeal by the Raduzhnaya Association of Russia. The LGBT advocacy group asked Vkontakte to change the social network so the status of same-sex marriage would be included.

The company eventually made the change and has actually spurred some controversy among the members of the network itself. You can read more about the controversy at The Moscow Times.
