With the Super Bowl just around the corner, game day commercial previews are starting to pop up on the web and, thanks to two wildly successful Super Bowl seasons, viewers everywhere have been looking forward to seeing what Volkswagen has in store this year. In 2011, VW topped the charts with their mini-Darth Vader spot, The Force, and last year they delighted fans with Star Wars singing dogs. This year the company is doing things a bit differently, turning to disgruntled YouTubers to strike happiness into the hearts of men.
The game day video, called ‘Sunny Side’, features some of the less happy YouTube stars out there, from Cara Hartmann who “really loves cats” to Stark County’s Phil Davidson, a very sad Packers fan, the guy that smashed his Xbox with a guitar (NSFW) and more. But thanks to Volkswagen, and some sweet tunes from Jimmy Cliff, all those once unhappy YouTubers have become…well, happy!
The video’s description on YouTube explains, “In this pre-game release video Volkswagen and reggae legend Jimmy Cliff join together to infuse much-needed positivity and good vibes into a world that’s become awash with freak-outs, meltdowns, and temper tantrums over about anything. It’s time to get happy.”
ABC News reports that “the development of ‘Sunny Side’ started last fall. Out of 300 video clips that Volkswagen screened, about 100 people and animals were cast for the Cliff portion of the spot, which was shot last weekend in Los Angeles.” Corey Proffitt, a product and marketing communications specialist for VW of America, explained that they wanted to pick YouTube videos that were “more well-known.”
It’s still not clear exactly what Volkswagen has in store for game day, and how YouTubers will be involved (if at all), but we’ll definitely be looking forward to it!
