This week, YouTube Worldwide announced the launch of four new languages, and they are taking other aspects of the site international too, introducing the ability for users in the UK to watch movies. The Guardian reports that YouTube UK has launched a free movie service “after striking deals with US studios including Sony Pictures and UK service Blinkbox.” The Guardian and other sites have reporting that this service is available in the US and UK. However, according to other international users (such as myself in Israel), the new YouTube Movies service appears to be available worldwide.
YouTube head of video partnerships, Donagh O’Mally, told The Guardian that, “This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows. We hope film lovers enjoy the range of titles in this free library, whether catching up on a mainstream hit or delving into the vast archive of classic films from decades past.”
Movies are catalogued in a new section of the site at YouTube.com/Movies. YouTube users will offer over 400 different movie titles on-demand, free of charge. Movies like Night of the Living Dead, Animal Farm, and Jackie Chan’s Fantasy Mission Force are among the available titles. Note that not all movies will be made available to viewers in all countries, so don’t be surprised if you get that dreaded “This video is not available in your country” message. However, so far all of the movies I have checked out today from Israel have worked for me. The new Movies channel should be a big step forward for YouTube in the competition with other online streaming video sites like Hulu and Netflix that have been offering movie titles for some time.
If anyone has any concrete information about the full reach of the YouTube Movie service, let us know. If you live outside of the US or the UK, are you able to watch movies on YouTube?
