Wedding Officiant Caught Insulting Foreign Couple On YouTube

In a stroke of unholy matrimony, a wedding officiant at a resort in the Maldives was caught insulting a foreign couple during their vow renewal ceremony, in his native language of Dhivehi, when a video of the ceremony was uploaded to YouTube. The video reveals a European couple being called swine, infidels and worse during the ceremony at Vilu Reef Beach and Spa Resort.

According to Minivan News, an independent news source for the Maldives, a 15-minute long video of the ceremony was uploaded to YouTube on October 24 by a member of the staff at the Vilu Reef Beach and Spa Resort. Apparently the staff member uploaded the video to YouTube “as a joke” and did not realize “the seriousness of the potential consequences.”

The beautiful resort advertises itself as the perfect place to renew your vows “on the beach of the tranquil island of Vilu Reef, just the two of you hand in hand against a golden sunset backdrop.” They don’t mention anything about the wedding officiant insulting you, calling you a motherf***** and making a mockery of your union. The couple in the video smile and hold their hands up in prayer as the officiant says, “You fornicate and make a lot of children. You drink and you eat pork. Most of the children that you have are marked with spots and blemishes. These children that you have are bastards.”

According to the Agence France-Presse, the Maldivian President, Mohamed Nasheed, apologized to the couple via telephone. He told them that two members of the resort staff had been arrested because of what was drawn to the attention of the resort owners, and the world, in the YouTube video.

This isn’t the first time that arrests have resulted from a video being posted to YouTube. In May, two stunt drivers faced jail time after posting a video of their road tricks to YouTube and a British teen was arrested after posting a video of himself taking a joyride in a stolen police car. However, I think that this is one of the most offensive stories of someone getting caught doing something because of a YouTube video and I hope the culprits get what’s coming to them for spoiling this couple’s special day.

Check out the video with translations below and let us know what you think. Be forewarned, some of the language is pretty strong.
