Today Weezer is debuting their eighth album, ‘Hurley’, and to promote the release they’ve put out all the stops on YouTube, with cameos in the videos of many of YouTube’s biggest stars. If you log on to YouTube today you’ll find Weezer auto-tuning the news, getting spanked by Hot For Words, rocking out to the sweet tunes of Fred Figglehorn and more. This may be one of the most original YouTube campaigns we’ve ever seen! Find out more and check out the videos after the jump.
The ‘Hurley’ YouTube Invasion campaign isn’t Weezer’s first foray into the world of YouTube. Back in 2008, their video for ‘Pork & Beans’ featured clips of some of the most viral videos of all time, and just last year they put our their own ‘Weezer Snuggie’, complete with YouTube video, to promote their album ‘Raditude’. However, the YouTube Invasion is taking the band to the next level in terms of YouTube promotions. By recruiting YouTube’s biggest stars, with millions of views and subscribers under their belts, Weezer is guaranteed huge coverage on the video site today and over the coming weeks.
What I also like about this campaign is that it illustrates the amazing things that YouTube can do for creators. These YouTube stars started out as ordinary people, uploading videos that they created in their bedrooms. Over the years they have achieved a massive following, turned YouTube into a primary source of income and arrived at a place where Weezer is searching them out for help in promoting their new album release. I’d say that’s pretty darned cool.
