Were Your Social Metrics Affected by Amazon’s Service Outage?

Amazon experienced outages in one of its cloud computing centers on Monday. As a result, numerous networks including Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram, Imgr, Airbnb, and Foursquare temporarily went down, leading to frustration for users and “wonky metrics” for marketers.

According to influence scoring site Pinfluencer, Pinterest experienced some downtime as a result of Amazon’s servers going down. “Subsequently, that affected Pinfluencer because of the data we collect from Pinterest,” the company explained in an email to subscribers. “You may have experienced some unexpected errors, and you might also find some wonky metrics in our platform for yesterday, October 22nd. This was out of our control, but we’re sorry if it caused you any inconvenience.”

By late afternoon, Amazon had “restored performance for about half of the volumes that experienced issues.” The company reported that the issue was fully resolved by Oct. 23 at 6:33 a.m.PDT.
