WH Smith Has Gone Offline Due to Self-Published Porn Scandal

whsmithBritish retailer WH Smith has taken down its website after a number of sexually explicit eBooks from the site’s self-published section were popping up in searches. According to reports, if you searched the word “daddy” x-rated self-published eBooks popped up next to kids books.

The retailer works with Kobo to sell millions of self-published. WH Smith explained that the titles slipped through the screening process in a letter posted on WHSmith.com‘s holding page. Here is more from the letter:

Last week we were made aware that a number of unacceptable titles were appearing on our website through the Kobo website that has an automated feed to ours. This is an industry wide issue impacting retailers that sell self published eBooks due to the explosion of self publishing, which in the main is good as it gives new authors the opportunity to get their content published. However we are disgusted by these particular titles, find this unacceptable and we in no way whatsoever condone them.

The retailer did not explain when it would be back up and running, but they did say that they would no longer sell self-published titles, “until we are completely confident that inappropriate books can never be shown again.”
