What Will GetGlue Do With Their Latest $12M Investment?

This week social check-in app GetGlue announced that they closed a $12 million round of financing.  The round, led by Rho Ventures, with participation from TimeWarner Investments, RRE Ventures and Union Square Ventures is the company’s largest round to date.  But what are they going to do with the money?  A spokesperson from GetGlue gave us the lowdown.

Before we get to what’s to come, let’s take a quick look at the current state of GetGlue.  According to a blog post announcing the latest round of funding, “This financing follows a year of strong growth for GetGlue.  We reached the 2 million user milestone and saw more than 100 million check-ins in 2011.  GetGlue database now contains 350 million check-ins, ratings and reviews.  In the television space, 75 major networks in the US and UK have used GetGlue to reward fans of 680 different shows.  We’ve also been honored with significant industry awards, including Mashable’s ‘Breakout Startup of the Year.’

So what does GetGlue have planned for 2012 and their latest $12M investment?  Several things, actually.  A spokesperson for the company told me that, for starters, they will be rolling out more personalization.  Their ‘Guide’ feature will be a lot more relevant than the current grid and will be personalized to highlight the shows that you enjoy and those that your friends are watching, in addition to what’s trending and exclusive content (video, images, etc.) to further user engagement.

GetGlue will also be launching updated iPad and Android tablet apps in the early part of 2012.  CEO Alex Iskold told Janko Roettgers of GigaOM that the new iteration of the iPad app will be a “personalized version of the TV Guide.”  We can also expect a lot more from networks and sponsors in the coming months.
