Rumors of Hulu’s integration with Xbox and iPad have been permeating the Web and if the rumors are true then the integration will be an integral part of the video site’s future as a competitor in the Web video arena. With the announcement of Google TV, growth of Apple TV and the migration of companies like Netflix towards Xbox, iPad and other devices it is extremely important for Hulu to expand into devices if they want to remain competitive.
According to Reuters, two sources have confirmed that Hulu “is looking to expand its content to consumer devices like the Xbox and iPad.” The site also announced that they will begin charging users for content in the near future, though the exact date has yet to be announced. Many people have asked whether viewers will be willing to pay for content from Hulu. Though there are opponents to a paid Hulu account, more and more people believe that paid web video sites can be successful.
Statistics show that, as web television becomes a larger part of people’s lives, viewers won’t have a problem with paying for content. After all, many people pay for expensive cable plans on a monthly basis. If Hulu expands into devices like Xbox and iPad and gives viewers the option to watch content not just on their computers but on their televisions as well, viewers are likely to be even more eager to pay for content.
Netflix has emerged as a dominant force in the arena of streaming video on devices. Netflix users can not only watch movies and television shows instantly on Xbox LIVE and the iPad, but it was also announced at Apple’s WWDC that Netflix is coming out with an iPhone application as well. If Hulu wants to compete it is imperative for them to offer similar services. Hulu will be strong competition for Netflix because although Netflix has a huge selection of film titles and television shows, Hulu streams current television shows right after they air on television. Recent episodes of shows like Glee are in high demand and Hulu is the go-to site for many online viewers.
Do you agree that Hulu integration with devices is crucial for the company’s future? Where do you see the future of web video going in the coming years?
