Why You Should 'Check-In' and Tweet for McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts

Need a doughnut or coffee fix? Jump on Twitter. Craving a McShake, and want to make it a feel-good, do-good combo? “Check in” to Foursquare. Want to know why, and how? Read on…

Two major fast food chains are shaking things up this month, turning to social media to launch major product initiatives.

McDonald’s has turned to Foursquare to promote its new McCafe Shake, while Dunkin’ Donuts is running a Twitter-based giveaway to promote its new Big ‘N Toasty Breakfast Sandwich.

The official launch of McDonald’s McCafe Shake, a new twist on its classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shakes now served in a clear McCafe cup and topped with whipped cream and a cherry, is being tied in with a McCafe Shake “Social Fundraiser.”

Between now and March 17, each time a customer ‘checks in’ on Foursquare at any McDonald’s restaurant in the Philadelphia, Pa., area and sends the check-in to Twitter with an @McDPhilly mention, the chain will do its part with a $1 donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). All participating costumers will also get a free McCafe Shake coupon.

For social media users outside of Philly, McDonald’s nationwide will feature its Irish-tinged Shamrock Shake throughout March, and will donate a portion of each of those shake sales to RMHC as well.

Dunkin’ Donuts, meanwhile, is turning to Twitter to promote its new, limited-edition Big ‘N Toasty breakfast option. The hearty breakfast sandwich, two fried eggs, four slices of bacon and a slice of cheese on two thick slices of Texas toast (priced at $3.29), is being promoted with “Big ‘N Toasty Trivia Tuesdays.”

On all five Tuesdays during March, Twitter followers of Dunkin’ (@DunkinDonuts) can watch for two questions posed by the chain that relate to “some of the world’s biggest things.”

The quick, and hungry, Tweeters who tweet correct answers using the hashtag #BigNToasty will be eligible for a chance to win a $100 Dunkin’ gift card. Dunkin’ will award a total of 10 of the $100 cards (one for each trivia question) throughout the month.
