Yahoo to Buy Summly, News App Built By Teenager

Yahoo has agreed to buy Summly, the news app created by a British teen, in a deal whose terms were not disclosed. Yahoo is closing down the Summly app, but will incorporate its features into Yahoo’s mobile apps.

Last year, Nick D’Aloisio launched the free app, which summarized top headlines for quick reading allowing users to browse headlines along with concise summaries of the stories. D’Aloisio raised more than $1 million for his app from supporters including Rupert Murdoch and Stephen Fry. Under the terms of the acquisition, D’Aloisio will join Yahoo.

“Mobile devices are at the center of how we engage with the people, experiences and interests we love,” Adam Cahan is SVP of mobile and emerging products at Yahoo, wrote on the Yahoo blog. ”Across Yahoo, we’re focused on creating beautiful experiences that people are excited to use every day — products that inspire and delight. We can’t wait to work with Nick and the Summly team to do just that.”
