Yelp Adds Inspection Scores to Restaurant Listings

Yelp is adding restaurants’ inspection scores to their venue pages, starting with San Francisco and New York, the company said today.

“While ratings and reviews are incredibly powerful ways to guide spending decisions, we’re always looking for new ways to supplement the information to provide a better experience for consumers,” CEO Jeremy Stoppelman wrote on the company’s blog.

The announcement comes in the same week that Facebook announced a search function that would allow users to search by categories such as “restaurants my friends like,” sending Yelp’s stock tumbling.

But for the scores to be meaningful, they have to be submitted by inspectors, not be restaurants. And to pull that off, Yelp had to create a standardized data format for cities to submit their inspection scores, suggesting that the feature has been in the pipeline for months.

Yelp worked with the cities of San Francisco and New York to establish the format.

“This new partnership with Yelp to offer restaurant health inspection scores on its site is another significant step in the Open Data movement. By making often hard-to-find government information more widely available to innovative companies like Yelp, we can make government more transparent,” San Francisco mayor Ed Lee said in a statement.
