This week has been shockingly fun for the visitors of E3 – from the advent of Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 to the Playstation®Move system that uses a wii-like controller – there’s not been a shortage of announcements that will be renovating the current entertainment landscape. Amidst the flurry of announcements is a deal between Yoostar Entertainment Group and CBS that will feature select CBS TV titles in the upcoming launch of Yoostar2, a social karaoke-based video game. Read more after the jump.
YooStar is a mass appeal title that lets people insert themselves into a movie, TV or background. The video-based interactive game first launched in August of last year. Players immerse themselves into specific scenes using the software’s teleprompter or ad-libbing their own version and then are inserted into digitally created backgrounds. This is hollywood ‘green-screen’ effect combined with a recorded clip can then be uploaded to Yoostar’s website and major social networks.
“Yoostar2 will bring the magic and fun of Hollywood into living rooms across America,” said Gregory Fischbach, President and CEO, Yoostar Entertainment Group. “The new console platforms have allowed us to make the experience totally immersive and incredibly easy.
Yoostar2, the sequel, will be the first Movie karaoke video game and leverage Kinect and Move’s motion technology to let players perform in hundreds of famous movie scenes, record their performance and share with family and friends on Facebook, through Xbox LIVE and Playstation Online. The performances will be viewable on all devices, including smartphones and consoles. Yoostar will drive retention through the use of game mechanics that players can earn through participation.
“CBS owns some of the most iconic television content of all time,” said Gregory Fischbach, President and CEO, Yoostar Entertainment Group. “Imagine being able to insert yourself into a ‘Survivor’ tribal council or into a scene with the team on ‘CSI.’ The combination of CBS content, Yoostar’s green screen technology, and the capabilities of console computing is incredibly powerful.”
Yoostar2′s success is posited by its appeal to brand and IP holders. Currently the game will be incorporating world-class movie content from picture studios like Paramount, Universal, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Bros and more. With the CBS deal, they will get access to titles such as America’s Next Top Model, Entertainment Tonight and Star Trek. YooStar Entertainment Group isn’t the only one vying for brand dollars. Playdom’s recent acquisition of Merscom positions them to attract similar deals, some of which, such as the deal with ESPN, are coming to fruition. John Pleasants, CEO of Playdom, confides in his company’s ability to deliver value for brands and consumers alike especially as Merscom already has deals in place with major brands such as National Geographic and NBC Universal.
“We believe that brands matter and that over time, as the social gaming industry matures, games which incorporate content from popular culture and widely respected brands will garner larger market share than those without it,” said John Pleasants, CEO of Playdom, in a press statement. “Merscom has 16 years experience working with content owners and we intend to call on this experience as we move into this promising area of our industry.”
It will be interesting to see current social gaming companies such as Zynga and Playdom venture out of web and mobile based gaming to leverage emerging console technologies such as motion-controlled gaming. To find out more details about Yoostar2, please check out their website here.
