Back in September rumors started flying about regularly scheduled programming coming to YouTube in 2012.  There was talk that YouTube was negotiating with some big studios and celebs to bring a constant stream of TV-quality content to their viewers.  Well folks, the time has come.  Just hours ago, YouTube announced that new original channels will start appearing on YouTube next month.  Over 90 channels have been announced so far.

Robert Kyncl, Global Head of Content Partnerships at YouTube writes on the YouTube blog, “Today we’re announcing that even more talented creators and original entertainment will soon join YouTube’s existing channel lineup, including channels created by well-known personalities and content producers from the TV, film, music, news, and sports fields, as well as some of the most innovative up-and-coming media companies in the world and some of YouTube’s own existing partners.  These channels will have something for everyone, whether you’re a mom, a comedy fan, a sports nut, a music lover or a pop-culture maven.”

You can find a sneak peek of the upcoming channels on YouTube’s original channels page.  The channels span the categories of Sports, Music, News & Education, Lifestyle and Pop Culture and include some YouTubers you may be familiar with like Machinima, Philip Defranco, MysteryGuitarMan, and The Fine Brothers, as well as some A-list celebrities that may surprise you.

According to the original channels listing, Madonna and partner Guy Oseary will be contributing to dance entertainment on DanceOn, Andrew Shue and Suzanne Somers have come on board with CafeMom, and we’ll also be seeing content from CSI-creator Anthony E. Zuiker, the creators of Project Runway, Jay-Z’s Life + Times, Tony Hawk, Rainn Wilson, Deepak Chopra, Ashton Kutcher and more, as well as a couple channels that will feature regular interviews with the hottest celebs.  My Damn Channel will also be joining n the fun with a live 30-minute weekly series (their first live series).

Why is YouTube doing this (aside from the fact that it’s going to be awesome)?  Kyncl writes, “Our goal with this channels expansion, along with the grants and educational programs we’ve launched in the past year, is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again.  And for advertisers, these channels will represent a new way to engage and reach their global consumers.”

Get ready for all these new channels to begin launching on YouTube next month and over the next year.  What are your thoughts about this big announcement?  Which channels are you looking forward to most?
