Latest YouTube Channel Redesign Brings Branded Banners To All Users

It seems like every couple of months YouTube has been rolling out a new homepage or channel redesign and they’re at it again.  Yesterday they rolled out the new “YouTube One Channel” to select partners, including iJustine, DeStorm, EpicMealTime, SORTED, MysteryGuitarMan, LOUD and Geek & Sundry.  According to iJustine’s post on the YouTube Creators Blog, the new channels design will soon be available to everyone, and she takes us through the new layout and features in a video guide.

IJustine writes, “I’m excited to announce that, starting today, you’ll see some channels on YouTube have a new design (including mine!).  The new YouTube One Channel is only in limited beta now, but soon everyone will be able to use the new design.”  And the new design is very, very different.

The most exciting thing about this new design, for YouTubers that were never “official” partners and were never able to upload a banner to their channel, is probably going to be the option to include a graphic a the top of the channel page, complete with clickable icons to take viewers to your social network profiles.

The new YouTube channel also has a new indexing system for creating playlists, which includes creating tags for playlists.  iJustine says, “they have tags now for everything.”  Check out the video below to hear more about the new design from iJustine.

Of course, as usual, the response isn’t looking so positive from commenters (both on iJustine’s video and on the blog post).  We’re seeing comments from “WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOUTUBE? ARE YOU DRUNK?” to “That looks reaaaally STUPID” and “So Many People JUST got used to the old format. NOW we have to get used to the New Format, NO WAY.”

But just like that last comment mentions, people did get used to the old format (even though they complained when that one launched as well) and they will get used to this one as well, which (imho) really looks like it has potential.

iJustine provides a couple of tips for YouTube creators preparing for the rollover to the new design.  For starters, she suggests creating a channel trailer to get people to subscribe.  “On your new channel, you can show a trailer that will only appear to viewers who aren’t already subscribed to your channel.  This is your chance to let visitors know what your channel is all about and tell them why they should subscribe!”

Additionally, she suggests preparing some channel art.  Channel art can be seen on any device—computer, mobile phone, tablet, and even on connected TVs.  YouTube has provided a resource on their site for Channel Art Guidelines.
