YouTube Testing Out New Homepage Interface Focused On Popular Content

One of the biggest complaints about the new YouTube homepage is that it is a little light on content.  Users want to see trending, popular and recommended videos right there in front of them without having to hunt for it.  YouTube’s latest homepage interface experiment, called “carousel,” appears to acknowledge some of these complaints.

Screenshots of YouTube’s carousel experiment, which seems to have been rolled out earlier this month, went up this morning on the Google Operating System blog.  The experimental design features a simplified layout with a look that is closer to how the homepage looked prior to YouTube’s major redesign last December.

At the top of the carousel experiment is a carousel (hence, the name) that users can scroll through for recommended, most popular, news, music and other categories.  It should be noted that it looks like this experiment is only for what people see when going to YouTube.com without logging in, which is why you won’t see any videos from channels you are subscribed to here.

Again, this is only an experiment, but if you want to check it out for yourself you’ll find an explanation on the Google Operating System blog about how you can try out YouTube Carousel.

What do you think of this experimental homepage, as compared to the current YouTube homepage (pictured below)?  We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
