YouTube has offered up Honors for popular videos since the early days of the site but today they’re launching Medals to celebrate YouTube’s biggest hits. The Medals include awards for All Time Most Popular, Recently Most Popular, and Trending and each category has it’s own page complete with the gold, silver and bronze record holders to make it easy for viewers to find the most popular videos with the most engagement.
The news about YouTube Medals was announced on the YouTube Creators blog this morning. Product Manager Kurt Wilms writes, “We’re starting with Medals that recognize popular videos with the most engagement,” which seems to imply that we’ll be seeing more reward medals rolled out in time.
So what determines whether or not a video gets a medal? The All Time Most Popular medal is given out to the greatest hits of YouTube with the highest lifetime view counts. It looks like the Top 10 have gold medals while a slightly larger number get silver and bronze. Recently Most Popular is rewarded to videos that have had a high engagement over the past seven days. The Trending medal goes to videos that have gotten a lot of attention over the past week and are currently trending, or showing exceptional growth in viewership. I imagine that these are the same videos you’ll be seeing on YouTube Trends.
If you want to stay in the loop you can subscribe to any of the Medals pages to stay updated on which videos are being awarded. Find out more in the Medals thread on YouTube’s Help forum. What’s your take on this new feature? Feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
