Ad Age Launches YouTube Original Channel Tracker

Last year when YouTube announced that they’d be investing in original content and rolling out a slew of original channels nobody knew what to expect.  Six months later, 100 new channels have been launched and while articles have been written about how YouTube original programming experiment has been going, there has been no really good way to track these channels’ successes and failures…until now.

Today Ad Age has launched a tracker to help viewers and industry mavens keep track of what’s trending among YouTube’s new original channels.  Ad Age’s YouTube Original Channel Tracker, which Michael Learmonth explains, is designed to “provide our readers with a snapshot of what’s working (and not working) now on the channels,” can be viewed at adage.com/youtube.

The tracker, pictured below, is interactive.  Viewers can click to visit channels, watch trending and all-time most-viewed videos and more.

Currently The Warner Sound, MondoMedia and SourceFed channels are leading the pack, all with over 5 million views last week.  Channels like ThePetCollective, fuse and START are not doing as well, all with under 700,000 views last week.

Learmonth explains that, “Over time we’d like to add new third-party data sources that reveal who’s watching what, as well as the ability to take the chart with you by embedding it where you like.”

Check out the chart and let us know what you think.  And if you’d like to hear more from Learmonth, you can hear him talk about viral video in the latest episode of PBS Off Book.
