YouTube Remote App Turns Your Android Phone Into A Remote Control

Have you ever wished you could turn your phone into a remote control and sit back and relax while watching online video on your computer, or you television screen? If you own an Android phone then now you can with the new YouTube Remote app.

The YouTube Remote app is designed to work seamlessly with YouTube Leanback, a relatively new service that allows viewers to sit back and watch a stream of YouTube videos, tailored to specific tastes, without having to search, browse, click or lift a finger. In theory Leanback is a great way to “lean back” and relax while watching a stream of YouTube videos. But what if you wanted to pause or skip ahead? You’d have to get up, walk over to your computer or Google TV and pause, skip ahead or perform whichever action you want to do.

The YouTube Remote Android app lets users pause, play, skip ahead, fast forward and reverse without having to get up. They can use their phone as a remote. To set up YouTube Remote to work on your Android phone all you have to do is “pair” your phone with your Leanback screen (your computer or television), sign into the app on your phone, and sign into YouTube Leanback on your computer or Google TV with the same user name. According to the YouTube blog, “Once connected, you can use the rich browse and discovery interface on YouTube Remote to find and queue up videos to watch, and send them all to Leanback with a single tap. With YouTube Remote you can play, pause, skip forward and back and even control the sound volume.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not YouTube Remote will be made available to iPhone users, but Android users who are interested in trying YouTube Remote out can download the app on the Android Market. The app is currently only available in the US, but according to the YouTube blog is will be available in other countries soon.

If you have an Android phone, are you considering downloading the YouTube Remote app?
