YouTube is rumored to be working on a new page for search results that will allow users refine their searches by choosing related tags. Consider this – you are looking for a video of a car but you aren’t sure what to search for. You search the keyword “race car” and the video you want doesn’t show up, but YouTube offers you an array of popular related tags like #indycar, #autos & vehicles, and #motor sport, which may have the video you are looking for. Tag refinements on YouTube would take a lot of the effort out of searching for videos, making it easier for you to find the content you are looking for.
The Google Operating System unofficial YouTube blog posted screenshots of the tag refinements testing yesterday. When you search for a video using a specific keyword, YouTube will provide tabs with additional popular keywords and you can click on them to restrict your list to a search for each particular keyword. According to the Google Operating System blog, not only user-defined keywords and tags will be used in tag refinements. Tags used in comments and video properties will also be included, making searches even more thorough.
Check out the screenshots of YouTube’s tag refinement tests below. Do you think the new system, if implemented, will make it easier for users to find videos or just complicate things?
