Engadget reports…

Zune HD’s “Apps” menu item spotted in the Marketplace, still short on details

All I can say is, finally! The Zune (old ones too) is based on Windows CE, the same engine beneath Windows Mobile smartphones. There’s been a number of storie about iPhone developers being approached by Microsoft to develop apps for the Zune. If The Zune HD “Apps” menu items is actually for installable apps (which makes perfect sense), these stories make sense.

If the new Zune HD is supposed to compete with the current generation iPod touch, it has to have apps. On the other hand, it will probably have a problem competing with the rumored new iPod touch that may be announced in September.

Let’s hope Microsoft approached Windows Mobile developers to develop for the Zune HD. And, I hope Microsoft fronted these loyal developers of a badly aging platform by fronting the costs for Zune HD app development.
