Zynga has opened their Zynga New York office by acquiring Facebook games developers Area/Code today. We’re big fans of Area/Code, as some of their earlier games like Parking Wars made good on the promise of “social games”, and also taught a lesson about how advertisers could actually use Facebook for marketing without being obnoxious. A great move by Zynga, in my opinion.

We’ll see how the transition goes for Area/Code, as joining a larger organization like Zynga often takes its toll on your ability to be creative. I mean even the powerhouses of Playfish clearly got a little scheduling pressure when they launched FIFA Superstars, as the game didn’t have quite what people were expecting from the title on launch.

That said, Zynga has a ton of resources that they’ll be sharing with Area/Code now that could help the smaller team grow. Zynga prides itself on creating great internal analytics tools, and we’ll see how that affects Area/Code. How long will it be until ParkingVille or CSI: Frontier City? Time will tell.
